THC Helps Protect the Heart After a Temporary Loss of Blood Flow

Researchers tested THC on rat hearts and human heart cells after blood flow was temporarily blocked and then restored.

They found that “Δ9-THC protected the heart, as evidenced by the improved recovery of cardiac function.”

The researchers also reported that Δ9-THC “promotes the viability of cardiomyocytes, improves their metabolic activity, decreases cell damage and restores heart mechanical function, serving as a cardioprotective.”

The findings suggest THC may help protect the heart when given before blood flow is cut off and shortly after blood flow returns.
